End of an Era

Well everyone - it's been a great few years...almost 4 years, since I started Stylefinds. But sadly, it's time to move on.

I appreciate everything this blog has given me, and everyone who I've met as a result along the way. When I started Stylefinds, I never expected it to go this far. Big big thanks to all of the writers and photographers who have contributed their time and effort to the blog over the years - I couldn't have done it without you!

I am closing this chapter of my life in order to focus more on my artwork. I will still be writing about fashion and art for Spade Magazine and ION Magazine, but my time as a fashion blogger is over for now. I'll be posting new art stuff on my blog and my flickr. A new website is in the works, and should be online (I hope) within the next month or so.

I will leave comments enabled for a while then shut things down for good. I won't be deleting the blog, but there won't be any more updates from now on. It truly is the end of an era, for me at least.

More than anything, thank you thank you thank you to all of my readers! You are lovely and I cannot put into words how much I appreciate having your time and attention since day 1. You can always find me on Twitter if you want to get in touch.

Blanche Macdonald Graduate Fashion Show - Behind the Scenes

Just over a week ago, Blanche Macdonald Centre hosted their largest graduate fashion show ever at the Westin Bayshore hotel in Vancouver. As one of many beaming grads I thought the show was incredibly well organized and ran smoothly with a few small glitches that went virtually unnoticed. The pre-show backstage scene was slightly more frantic, but organizers remained collected and students were happy to participate in the excitement.

The security crew was excellent and quickly turned away more than one potential backstage-crasher. Prior to showtime grads tested the runway, which I found to be narrow and a bit shaky at first, but at the end of the show I enjoyed the walk with my fellow grads and felt a sense of accomplishment...if the runway was shaking I certainly didn't notice. From the buzz it seems that most grads had a wonderful experience and were happy to end a tough school year in a memorable and positive way. Congratulations to Blanche Macdonald's 2009 Fashion Design Program Graduates!

Ingenue Fashion House

Walking into this sleek Broadway boutique, I was instantly charmed. Everywhere I looked, there were perfectly chosen, perfectly simple garments from local and Canadian designers. I was in a fashionista's playground and there was no way I wasn't going to play so I started loading up with delectable goodies to try on.

Manager Jen Gagne was her usual adorable and charming self, chatting with me while helping to outfit another customer for her fabulous birthday dinner. While I browsed, I was blown away at the awesome selection: buttery leather belts from Erin Templeton, adorable frocks from dace, lily+jae and Oyuna (the new line from the creators of KBO Clothing), and gorgeous tailored skirts and jackets from Ingenue's ethically produced house line. I grabbed a little bit of everything and headed to the fitting rooms.

Excuse the not-so-cute pictures I took in the mirror... there's a reason I'm a writer and not a photographer:

This is me looking a little embarrassed to be taking a picture of myself, but nonetheless rocking an adorable navy dress by Oyuna and a crocheted shrug by Surely One designs. I had the pleasure of meeting the designer of Surely One, a sweet and elegantly chic lady by the name of Shirley. She hand knits and crochets all the shrugs and sweet beret hats that Ingenue carries and her work is only available there. I fell in love with the soft cover-up and instantly pictured it with a shiny cocktail dress, adding texture and a bit of whimsy.

And this beauty of an asymmetrical blazer was what ultimately came home with me. It's part of Ingenue's newest project: partnering with 15 tailors in Vietnam who create the perfectly tailored pieces for Ingenue's house line. Because the group is small and Ingenue works with them directly, not only is the quality fabulous, but the tailors get to set their own rates and working hours. The most exciting thing about this partnership is that Ingenue is offering a custom workwear service. All you have to do is drop by, get measured and pick out your preferred styles, colours and fabrications and soon you'll have workwear tailored to your body. As a woman who suffers from the double indignity of gaping buttons on shirts and gaping waistbands on skirts and trousers (most of the time, I love my hourglass figure, but trying on workwear is not one of them), I am maybe a little over-excited by the prospect of custom clothing. Ingenue is the only shop in Vancouver that offers this service.

Overall, I leave Ingenue and walk into the misty Vancouver evening grinning like a fool. The combination of Jen's sweetly sincere compliments (seriously, she is so nice) and finding a great piece that fits me like a glove is heady and as I head downtown to meet with my girlfriends, I'm already scheming where to stash the jacket I'm wearing because my new blazer is far superior.

Malene Grotrian One Year Anniversary Sale!

Of course, I'm totally biased, seeing as I treated myself to one of her dresses (see below - sexy, right?!) for my birthday and am an unabashed fan - but definitely stop by to check out this sale and fun event!

Planning my route through the Eastside Culture Crawl

Over breakfast this morning, I am poring over the map and website in order to plan my afternoon at the Eastside Culture Crawl. By far, it is the most interesting of Vancouver's annual and semi-annual markets because it isn't simply a market. Arm yourself with a map and wander through 6 Vancouver East neighbourhoods as this is the one event where you enter artists' studios to see what they do and perhaps pick up a few beautiful pieces along the way.

A plethora of artistic media are represented. I will be focusing my tour on fashion, jewellery, and pottery. Among the artists on my must-visit list are:

If you're looking for fabulous art but are short on time, it's easiest to visit buildings that house multiple studios: the Parker Street Studios, William Clark Studios, Onion Studio, and Mergatroid Building, Octopus Studios are among the largest buildings.

The Eastside Culture Crawl runs from 11 am to 6 pm this Saturday and Sunday.

Jonathan+Olivia Weekend Sale

VFW SS 2010: Papillon

Vancouver-based contemporary label Papillon has been creating clothing for over 30 years. I'm sure in that time the design team has seen various trends cycle in and out of fashion. One perennially popular style is boho-chic.

The collection Papillon presented for VFW had a definite boho feel. Yet while there were plenty of maxi dresses, floral and ethnic-inspired prints, and flowy fabrics on show, there were no peasant blouses, tunics, or fringe details in sight.

In fact, the runway show began with a series of mini-dresses - one paired with a cropped jean jacket and another with a fitted black blazer. The use of shiny fabrics and rich colours added a more modern touch than is typically associated with boho clothing.

I quite liked this black and gold smock dress. You often see smock tube dresses in pastel colours during the summertime. I find this style of dress in those types of colours, particularly in a shorter length, can leave women looking like as though on their way to the beach... or a play-date. The above dress, however, is slightly more sophisticated.

Papillon introduced maxi dresses about halfway through their spring 2010 collection. As with the other pieces of the collection, these dresses were less hippie-gypsy and more fresh and modern. They would probably be more suitable for a garden party than Glastonbury - sorry Sienna.

VFW SS2010 Paul Hardy

Paul Hardy is a Calgary based designer whose talent has been compared to that of Marc Jacobs and Stella McCartney. Hardy's Spring/Summer 2010 collection drew inspiration from his recent trip to Africa. The collection was shown entirely in white from head to toe and the models radiated sophistication and a quiet strength.

Ethereal white kept the focus on Hardy's exquisite details and silhouettes

I loved this pretty ensemble for its softly structured feminine look

In black and with a glam tank this suit would go from daywear to urban night out in a wink

This girly look it not for the faint of heart, but is beautifully executed and
the texture of the jacket seemed so airy that I wanted to touch it

A divine evening gown is a little playful with its wispy collar

I enjoy unusual garments. This dress makes a statement and is subtle in its prettiness.

Paul Hardy looking dapper. There's just something so endearing about a well-dressed man.

While traveling in Africa, Hardy had a life changing experience and after returning home to Canada was moved to invest in Africa’s economy and its citizens. Hardy is currently in the process of creating a development project called 'Reversal of Fortune' which will help African women who have been victimized by rebel groups and help to educate future leaders. It is wonderful to see designers like Paul Hardy becoming global citizens and taking on major social issues and humanitarian pursuits.

VFW SS 2010: Button

Local clothing line Button presented its spring collection at Vancouver Fashion Week last Wednesday. Consisting mainly of easy-to-wear mini dresses and casual separates, this youthful collection will appeal to those who like their fashion flirty and feminine. Button is designed by Taiwan-born Vancouverite Janice Wang.

The show began with a relaxed tunic dress and a denim romper that brought to mind springtime picnics and miniature golf.

There were plenty of prints on offer - mainly florals. I liked the floral-print shorts surprisingly, which were relatively subtle due to the tone on tone colour. The ruffle detail on the white blouse above was repeated on many of the collection's pieces.

The above shirt dress (available in both orange and blue) has a vintage feel I like. While some of the looks on the runway may have been a little too youthful for my own taste - though I'm not an old age pensioner quite yet - the shirt dresses would likely suit a wider range of women than the denim romper would.

I'm not sure if it was the hot pink, the polka dots, or the styling, but this look made me think of the Barbie 50th Anniversary Show held during New York Fashion Week last February. The overall sweetness of the dress was tuned down with black opaque tights and ankle boots.

Scout Boutique Fashion Show Nov 20th

Well, I'm back in Vancouver from a two-month trip to some of the most fashionable cities on the planet...New York, Paris, Berlin and London to be more specific. I'm happy to be home and will be posting here much more often from now on!

As I try desperately to clean out my inbox and RSVP to all the events I've been invited to over the next month or so, here is one that I'm looking forward to:

Scout Boutique (152 East 8th Avenue @ Main) is holding a holiday fashion show on Friday November 20th featuring Mad Men inspired designs from Stop Staring as well as holiday wear from local designer Sweet Soul. In addition to this, the show will feature international creations from Paris, London and Italy along with oh-so-glam corsets and accessories from Vancouver's own master corsetiere Melanie Talkington at Lace Embrace Atelier.

The event starts at 7pm with wine and cheese and 15% off all in-store merchandise. Fashion show will begin at 8pm, following which a live DJ will play til' late.

VFW SS2010 - Day 2 Hawks Ave

Designer Jenny Sandberg is the woman behind Hawks Ave, an eco-conscious brand based out of Vancouver. A rock n' roll inspired line with teeth, Hawks Ave took a bite out of Vancouver Fashion Week's runway with hard candy colours and and a whole lot of attitude.

In addition to having stellar design skills, Jenny has expertise in manufacturing and production. I have first-hand knowledge of her production know-how from my days as a student in her Manufacturing class at Blanche Macdonald. She was an incredibly knowledgeable instructor and her construction skills show in the quality of her line.

Her Spring/Summer 2010 collection features bold and pretty printed graphics like animal tracks, Canadian creatures, and pistols. The prints revealed a unique take on the hunter vs. hunted theme.

Hawks Ave produces limited edition pieces in small quantities. Visit local boutiques like Planet Claire to pick up your favourite separates. You can choose from a selection of styles to create a unique, edgy look while getting your green on in bamboo and organic cotton jersey fabrics.

What: A grand re-opening for a chic Kits boutique that carries an impeccable array of local designers such as Dace, Peel, Erin Templeton, jewelry from Bueno Style and lots more. I'll definitely be dropping by to check out the new store layout, new ethically-made house line and chat with whatever lovely fashionistas I meet there!

VFW SS 2010: Dorothy Grant

Vancouver Fashion Week got off to a strong start on Wednesday, courtesy of traditional Haida artist and fashion designer Dorothy Grant. Alaskan-born Grant, a graduate of Helen Lefeaux, first started to incorporate Haida art in clothing during the 1980s.

Prior to the runway show, the first of the week, native leader Leonard George performed a traditional blessing. The show opened with a dramatic poncho.

Raven Creation Tunic. I loved the deep blue colour of this.

The cultural influence in Grant's collection was very apparent, yet her pieces refrained from appearing costume-like as so often happens with 'ethnic fashion.' Instead, I enjoyed her contemporary take on traditional artistry.

My favourite piece in the collection was the above coat. The fact that I never expected something like that to come down the runway was probably what I liked about it the most... that and all the delightful details.

Although the Raven takes the World Jacket may be a little overpowering on my frame, I thought it was very well executed. I really appreciated the fact that Grant is adept at working with a variety of natural fabrics: leather, wool, silk, cotton, etc.

I love the retro feel of swing coats. The above coat had great movement on the runway - a swing coat that really swings! Though presented as part of a spring collection, I think it would work just as well for a chilly fall in Vancouver.

The shawls were some of the most traditional yet versatile pieces in the collection. Earlier this year, Grant visited Italy to speak to a group of fashion students. While there, the designer contacted the Italian Chamber of Commerce and was introduced to their world-class manufacturing mills. The resulting shawls, a combination of Haida art and Italian textiles, is unprecedented.

Fashion on film

As usual, I've been super busy with work. But things have finally slowed down enough to allow me a rare afternoon at the movies.

October was a sensational month for fashion cinema. I'd been waiting since April for Coco avant Chanel to reach Vancouver. (I love Audrey Tautou, as much for her talent as an actress as for her style.) It finally arrived and I've finally been able to go! I still haven't seen The September Issue, which reveals another side of the devil who wears prada.

In honour of the film, here are my picks for a sustainable outfit worthy of Coco:

VFW SS2010 - Day 2 Nate Organics

Nate Organics is a self-described 'eco-forward clothing collective' based out of Vancouver. All Nate Organics pieces are made from organic materials from fair-trade factories. Founded in 2004, NATE is an acronym for Natural Authentic Textile Experience (and happens to be the name of founder Adam Katz's adorable Bernese mountain dog). Nate Organics is committed to producing eco-conscious clothing that scores points for style and quality.

The Spring/Summer 2010 line offered a little bit of everything for the casual connoisseur including bean bag animals that models tossed at the fashionable crowd. I found myself wanting to get my hands on a beanbag seahorse.

Here we have a cropped and comfy terry robe paired with colourful briefs.
I can think of several men who would don this look at home.

Here we're getting to the slightly funkier urbanwear. I enjoyed the graphic prints, punchy phrases and mixed fabrics. It is something I've seen before, but Nate Organics put a fresh spin on the idea that a younger fashion set would dig.

The colour story in this outfit was cool and strong.
Earth tones mixed with blues make this stylish weekend wear.

Nate Organics has a selection of fashion-forward hats, which were thoughtfully paired with streetwear. The perfect chapeau can elevate any casual look to a more sophisticated level.

VFW Opening Gala @ Terminal City Club

Terminal City Club played host to the Opening Gala of Vancouver Fashion Week on Wednesday. Each participating VFW designer was present with at least one model dressed in something from their Spring/Summer 2010 collections.

Wednesday's gala also marked the first annual Vancouver Fashion Week Hair & Make-up Expo. In addition to providing a venue for hair and make-up stylists to showcase their work, the winning contestant receives a $1000 (second places receives $500 worth of hair and beauty goods).

The crowd at these local events typically feature the usual suspects: designers, media, buyers, sponsors. At this particular gala the crowd seemed more diverse. And by that I mean I didn't recognize the majority of people present! This was slightly disconcerting since the local fashion community is fairly small and tight knit.

VFW is a ticketed event of course. Maybe more fashionable members of the public were out in force? At the same time, the VFW team have made great strides in bringing more international designers to the event. With those designers also come sponsors, buyers, and media from around the world. There is a definite international feel to VFW this season, but not at the detriment to local talent. So perhaps all the new faces are a good sign for our growing fashion scene?

Obakki Spring Preview Event

Fall may be settling in and temperatures may be dropping, but last Thursday at the Obakki flagship store in Gastown, all hearts and minds were thinking of spring--the new spring/summer 2010 collection, to be exact. Some of Vancouver's most fashionable folks and media gathered for an exclusive glimpse of what's coming in Obakki's new collection. While waiting for the show to begin, guests browsed the current season's merchandise and sipped on drinks. Bartenders and a live DJ kept the party going.

Next season's collection featured highly wearable pieces in a mostly neutral palette punctuated by a dash of blue here and there. Sheer drapey tops with racerback detailing struck just the right balance between casual luxury and sporty playfulness. Patterns and colours were rare among the pieces presented, making the cobalt blue cocktail dress, sporadic use of plaid, and haute interpretations of tie dye stand out that much more. The pieces that caught my eye were a 3/4 sleeve boyfriend blazer with contrasting patterned trim where the sleeve cuffs were rolled up, high-waisted dress shorts, and one-shoulder cocktail dresses with ruching up and down the sides. Every outfit moved wonderfully as the model made her way down the runway, although I couldn't help but wonder whetehr these clothes would be just as flattering and compelling on a less statuesque figure.

Browns Focus Halloween Party 2009: Shepherd's Bush

This year I spent Halloween in London with Fiona Garden. After an insanely epic day of running round the city picking up bits and pieces of costumes from various sources, we ended up at the Browns Focus party wearing Mark Fast FW09 pretty much head to toe...and ended up front and centre on POP Magazine's blog!

Spent a lot of time talking with Annette Felder from FELDER FELDER. She and I originally met at a showroom in Paris at the end of fashion week - it was great to get to know her a bit better, she and her sister Daniela are both so talented and so lovely.

My costume was meant to be Storm, from that time in the 80's where she defeated Callisto the leader of the Morlocks, and cut her hair into a mowhawk and got even more badass than she already was (yes, for some reason I know waay too much about the X-men). However due to lack of proper planning and living out of a suitcase for the past two months, it ended up being a rather creative interpretation of the Storm idea. I figure that the blonde mowhawk was 90% of the look anyways.

Upcoming Student Fashion Shows

While most college students are busy with midterms this time of year, some of the city's fledgling fashionistas are gearing up for graduation.

Students graduating from The Art Institute of Vancouver's Fashion Design and Merchandising program will be presenting a fashion show on October 28th to showcase their own creations. Global Gallery, which celebrates the diversity of the students' collections, will have two showings at The Red Robinson Theatre.

The following week, the latest graduating class of John Casablancas Fashion Business and Creative Arts Program will be presenting a fashion show entitled Paradox. In addition to showcasing their styling stills, 4 members of the graduating class will also be sending their own designs down the runway.

BCFW SS 2010 Day 5: Gabbeh

Fariba Mirzaie backstage

Carpet connoisseurs are likely familiar with Gabbeh rugs: a traditional type of Persian carpet. These carpets are usually made by women and are commonly woven to tell a story. The word gabbeh - which comes from the Persian meaning of raw, natural and uncut - seems a fitting name for the designs of Fariba Mirzaie.

Iranian-born designer Fariba Mirzaie has a style all her own. It was evident from the time that the first model stepped onto the runway for Gabbeh's SS 2010 collection at BCFW.

I was both delighted by the unique pieces Mirzaie created and puzzled by how she actually constructed some of them. The materials used certainly gave the collection a distinct feel. Perhaps not surprising, considering Mirzaie is a graduate of the Capilano College Textile Arts program.

I was surprised to discover that, in fact, the entire collection was made of fabric. Mirzaie has been known to use unusual materials in the past - including dry leaves, corn husks, and tree bark. So while no actual plant life was utilized to create Gabbeh's SS collection, nature certainly served as a major source of inspiration.

With all the fabrics in Mirzaie's collection being hand-cut, hand-dyed and hand-painted, it's understandable that her work would be referred to by some as 'wearable art.' In fact, Gabbeh designs have been featured in various art exhibitions.

In 2008, Mirzaie opened Gabbeh Contemporary Textile Gallery. The shop and gallery offers textiles, fashion, and artwork. Local artists also have the opportunity to showcase their work through the gallery exhibition program.

BCFW SS 2010 Day 5: Variety

The Variety - The Children's Charity event was the final show of BCFW and featured a live band, a Capoeira performance and a live auction to raise funds for the charity. The show itself was lighthearted and focused on kids strutting their stuff on the runway as well as menswear and womenswear from Brooks Brothers. The children, babies, and dogs were adorable, but the show itself was also a welcome reminder that fashion can be about giving back to our community.

BCFW SS 2010 Day 5: Bhana

Trisha Rampersad showed her spring/summer 2010 collection for BHANA (a family namesake meaning Divine Will and Pleasure) at BCFW. BHANA draws on its Vancouver roots and takes inspiration from both the moodiness of our 'nearly year-round' rainy weather and then plays it against Vancouver's balmy summer and booming beach culture. This clever juxtaposition lead to a strong collection with a solid colour palette of ocean blues, sandy tones, and crisp, cool white.

Trisha's collection was pretty, but what made it especially exciting was her ability to create intricate insets, playful asymmetrical tailoring, and her use of unique seaming for both the menswear and womenswear. The pieces in this collection were wearable and could easily become your favourite go-to pieces of the season. Some of the sexy dresses elicited gasps from the audience at the show, but my favourites were the simple separates that could be dressed up or down and mixed and matched to your hearts content.

BCFW SS 2010 Day 5: Brooks Brothers

First year Kwantlen student, Allison Chan, shares her thoughts with Stylefinds readers on her first BCFW show: Brooks Brothers.

A brilliant red-orange down vest paired with black chinos filled the scene as the pouty male model started the show for Brooks Brothers on Saturday, October 3rd at BCFW. The remaining eleven looks had a less forcefully eye-grabbing look as casual outfits of soothing neutral beige, browns, blacks, and greys proceeded. Each one of them was matched with deep reds, oranges, and purples that ensured interest in the outfits.

A striking brown plaid suit with a yellow and black satin tie marked the commencement of their dressy looks and it was my favourite look out of the collection. The change in pattern, from solids to a plaid, drew my eyes and lifted life from the dark neutrals of the previous looks; the leather tan shoes were also a stunning part of the outfit. All the suits were classy and sophisticated with a 2-button jacket featuring side vents and ties that stood out in a repeating palette of red, orange and purple.

Due to a late start and the short show, I was left wanting to see more from Brooks Brothers. Overall, the collection had a dark colour scheme and neutral shades but each outfit had an emphasis and focal point. The twelve looks they put together and presented were attractive and appealing, pleasing most of the audience.

BCFW SS 2010 Day 2: Red Jade

Margarita Angelatos showed her first full collection at BC Fashion Week at Circa on Wednesday. I was eager to see the Red Jade collection after Margarita's big win at BCFW last year. When I spoke to her at BCFW SS 2009, Margarita told me she was honoured by the competiton's outcome. A review of Generation Next SS 2009 can be found here.

The colour palette for Red Jade's SS 2010 collection consisted mainly of white, black, and gray - with hits of bold yellow. I loved the way Margarita combined both fluid and more structured pieces in this collection. The Red Jade look that won over the judges - and yours truly - at the previous BCFW was still apparent; just fleshed out over 30 looks as opposed to 10.

Quirky touches like the cut-out detail on the lapel of the Danya Jacket and the short butterfly sleeves on the Akiha Top caught my attention. I also loved the slouchy pockets on the Teresa Dress. And while the details are what I love most about Red Jade, Margarita is equally skilled at both draping and fit.

Eco-fashionistas should also know that Margarita is as dedicated to the environment as she is to style; all Red Jade clothing is made with sustainable and natural fabrics. The show's final two looks had more of an evening feel. Pieces made of what appeared to be silk satin shimmered in the Circa spotlights. While the Fotina Blouse is not my cup of tea, I thought the Sultana Dress was quite beautiful. And who knew - apparently I have similar tastes with Margarita's daughter. Mini-Margarita stepped out to take a bow with mom at the conclusion of the show, and she happened to be wearing a variation of the Sultana!

BCFW SS 2010 Day 2: Generation Next

Circa on Granville, the location of all BC Fashion Week shows Wednesday, was packed with industry insiders, media, and members of the public that gathered for the Generation Next fashion show. Generation Next was created to provide emerging local designers with a much-needed leg up. Now in its fourth season, the competition is sponsored by BCFW in partnership with Fashion High.

Designers must complete a thorough vetting process - including submitting samples, look books, business plans and attending interviews - before the judging panel chooses the 3 finalists for BCFW. Pauline Siu of flora&fauna, Su-Hui Chu of Ella Peru, and Patricia Nayel of Pure Magnolia were the successful candidates this season, vying for the title of Generation Next Designer Spring/Summer 2010 and a prize package that includes a sponsored BCFW show, public relations services, a marketing plan, a booth at Portobello West and more!

Following an introduction from Fashion High's Sarah Murray, the composite show kicked off with flora&fauna. Designer Pauline Siu presented a cohesive, casual, and decidely West Coast collection. Flowing fabrics in easy-to-wear pieces were simultaneously relaxed and feminine. Standouts for me included the the white 'cocoon' dress with a funnel collar, and the long magenta dress with pockets. I also enjoyed the sweet butterfly hair accessories, which lent a definite air of spring to the collection.

Up next was Ella Peru. I was immediately struck by Su-Hui Chu's use of prints: enough to make an impact and create visual interest, yet not enough to induce a migraine. The batik print top and shorts combo (thought it was a jumpsuit at first) and the high-waisted black and white skirt were favourites of mine. I also appreciated little details like the lining on the beige blazer and the button jacket. And for all fashionistas who love a cropped pant, take heart; Ella Peru has many options you'll love.

Closing out the show was Pure Magnolia. While sustainability and bridalwear are concepts rarely associated with one another, Patty Nayel shows that the unlikely pairing can be married successfully - at least in clothing terms.

The first dress caught my attention straight away: a classic strapless white dress - with a train - which was adorned with (reclaimed) feathers. The gold ball gown style dress also gets top marks in my books. Nayel managed to show quite a bit of variety in her collection. There were wedding dresses of various styles and silhouettes, as well a bridesmaid look or two.

After all the designers were finished showing their 10-look collections, it was time for the judges to make their decision. While the panel deliberated a raffle draw was held. Prizes up for grabs included a Malene Grotian dress and tops from We3.

When the judges made their final decision, based of course on the collections presented as well as on samples, photos, and business plans submitted in advance, the Generation Next Designer for Spring/Summer 2010 was announced: Ella Peru! A jubilant Su-Hui Chu jumped up and down, clearly very excited by the win. Congrats to Ella Peru and the other participating designers for a wonderful showing at BCFW.

BCFW SS 2010 Day 4: Francis Hendy

Francis Hendy has been designing out of the New York fashion district for the past eight years and has designed for the likes of Missy Elliot, Usher, and Lil John.

His Spring/Summer 2010 womenswear collection seemed to be fairly cohesive compared to the menswear. I enjoyed watching the models work the girly, ruffled party dresses on the runway. The pretty prints read as edgy in the acid green and shocking pink colour combo. The look was fresh and would appeal to a variety of women who want to get the girly look while feeling strong. I also liked the glossy black floor-length trench, which made me think of a fashion forward femme fatale super vixen.

The menswear featured a mashup of seersucker, stripes, plaids, bold colours, combinations of matte and glossy textures, and graphic prints. I picked up on what could be an A Clockwork Orange inspiration based on the bowler hats and eyemakeup that focused on one eye only. The colour palette tended to favour bold citrus colours and various shades of blue.

The menswear line also featured nicely tailored jackets, pants and shirts. Many of the pieces were wearable and the in-your-face looks would have remained edgy while having a wider appeal to potential buyers, had they been styled differently. In the end, I enjoyed the show but left feeling somewhat confused as some of the menswear seemed 'busy' and I could not discern a clear theme.

BCFW SS 2010 Day 2: Malene Grotrian

Fresh on the heels of her NYFW triumph, Malene Grotrian presented another elegantly beautiful collection at Wednesday night's show in Circa Resto Lounge. As with her other collections, the clothes featured beautiful textiles and textures--no surprise considering that Malene sources her fabrics from Italy and Montreal. What is different this time, though, is that Malene turned to nature instead of classic glamour for inspiration. "This collection was inspired by sand," she said to me after the show. "The way it looks when it's wet or dry, the way it moves, the different shades of gray on pebbles and stone at the beach."

Following inspiration closely, then, this season's clothes drew on a neutral colour palette of beiges, white, and black with the occasional jolt of vibrant crimson. Models sashayed down the "runway" (really a path earmarked to circulate throughout Circa's lower level) to the sounds of a violinist playing over a pounding backbeat. High-waisted pencil skirts in luxurious fabrics and dresses with black leather tie belts put all emphasis on the waist. The dresses themselves were either loose and flowing (a draped jersey number, a lingerie-inspired slip dress with an asymmetrical hem) or structured.

Although this collection featured the trademark bustiers and open bolero jackets that Malene does so well, it also seemed to take a page from tailored menswear. I spied shirtdresses, crisp button-down blouses, and even an embroidered tuxedo jacket with satiny lapels. But the menswear influences were transmogrified by femininity in the form of seams that complement curves, or oversized ruffles spilling down the front of a satiny shirtdress.

The closing look--a strapless black-and-white embroidered gown with a flowing train--earned gasps of admiration and applause from the audience. For me, it also recalled the high drama of the tulle-lined ballgown skirts at last season's VFW show.

BCFW SS 2010 Day 1: Jacqueline Conoir Collection

RozeMerie Cuevas, the creative mind behind Jacqueline Conoir, designs each collection around an imaginary persona, a "confident, sensual, sexy, [and] elegant" woman who is constantly moving forward and relentlessly modern. (Read more about the Jacqueline Conoir woman in the interview I did with Cuevas for Vancouver Fashion eZine here.) In this collection, the JC woman seems to have evolved, embracing youthful exuberance and rock n' roll edginess alongside her signature bohemian bourgeois glamour.

Monday's show at Fortune Night Club began with suiting done in soft gray and creative cuts (cropped sleeves, boxy and hip-length jackets, wide-legged and skinny trousers). Since the label's inception in 1985, JC fans have come to expect impeccably tailored and detailed suiting, but this season's surprising twist lay in what the suits were paired with: white jersey tops, sometimes off-the-shoulder, always drapey, screened with a black-and-white image of Edie Sedgwick wearing chandelier earrings. The effect was rock n' roll but unabashedly feminine at the same time.

Other pieces stood out as well: a high-waisted cropped pant (surprisingly flattering with heels), a slinky gray halter jumpsuit, skirts and dresses with pockets. Ensembles were styled with asymmetrical lightweight ponchos and cardigans made from jersey or loose knits and statement necklaces by Isabella Diamond.

After the suiting came flowing gowns in silk chiffons--some with open backs, others with halter necklines. Unlike the oversized floral prints on the gowns from the spring/summer 2009 collection, these frocks featured surpisingly earthy washes of colour with bright jolts of green, electric blue, and fuchsia. The fact that they were styled with leather boots proves that these gowns are versatile enough to transition between seasons. The show finished with cream-coloured gowns cinched at the waist with strands of pearls and chiffon sashes...so flowy and free-spirited, I'm sure I wasn't the only one who thought these dresses would look right at home in a beach wedding.

RozeMerie Cuevas came out on the runway at the end of the show dressed in one of her own Edie Sedgwick white jersey tops.

John Fluevog's flagship Gastown location played host to the Opening Gala of BC Fashion Week on Sunday night. Designers, media, and the rest of Vancouver's most stylish were welcomed with a lively demonstration of Capoeira, courtesy of instructors and students from Capoeira Aché Brasil Academy. Gala attendees were also treated to some tasty appetizers from Shakin' Not Stirred Lounge & Grill.

While schmoozing is generally the main pastime at events such as these, one of my favourite things to do is outfit-watch: taking in fashionistas in all their stylish splendour never gets old. My pick for best dressed at the gala? Stacey McKenzie. The super-fierce Ms. McKenzie is in town to coach BCFW models. I wonder if they picked up any style tips?

Two of Hearts "I Love Local" Fall Fashion Show & Party

Two of Hearts designers and boutique owners Jenny Yen and Tabitha Savoie really heart local. In fact, they declared their love of local fashion and design proudly (in T-shirt and cake form!) at their "I Love Local" party last Saturday evening. Friends, well-wishers, and members of the fashion industry gathered at the cozy Main St. boutique and browsed the racks while waiting for the fashion show to begin. Bargain hunters, take note: The front of the store is stocked full of spring/summer merchandise marked down to ridiculously good prices. I spied a belted teal tank dress from the CiCi line that looked so good when I tried it on, I bought it on the spot and wore it for the rest of the party.

My perusal of the store yielded other treasures as well. That's one of the things I love about visiting the Two of Hearts Boutique: Aside from being the place to find CiCi, Togs, and Two of Hearts apparel, their selection of jewelry, accessories, and handmade goodies constantly changes.

These pouches and bags by Big Rock are an intriguing concept. Made from colourful and punchy fabrics, each pouch/bag features snaps and buttons. You can combine them into a completely unique, one-of-a-kind bag with compartments that suit your needs. Neat eh?

The show featured clothes from the Two of Hearts, CiCi, and Togs fall/winter 2009 collections styled alongside locally made and designed accessories from the store. Expect to see a lot of ladylike polish this season combined with the playful and sporty aesthetic that Two of Hearts is known for. Tops and sweater dresses featured interesting neckline details like ties and cowl necks. A belted waist was the look du jour, showing up on fitted skirts and a trench-inspired sleeveless dress. Screened details and coloured fabric insets added visual interest to dresses and sweaters. Jenny and Tabitha also remade some perennial favourites such as the Gigi dress and the Kendra hoodie dress in new fabrications. With every new look that came out, the crowd murmured "Ooh I like that!" and "That is cute!"

Congratulations to Jenny and Tabitha on reaching the 6-month milestone with their boutique and continuing to promote Vancouver fashion! As a Vancouver fashion blogger, it gives me immense pleasure to see talented individuals from our fair city get recognition for the amazing work they're doing. Malene Grotrian is one such talent. I've been a huge fan of her work since meeting her at Blushing Boutique in February and watched delightedly as she received more and more recognition in the past year and made her Vancouver Fashion Week debut. And now she's showing at New York Fashion Week, the only Canadian designer to do so!

Vancouverites who aren't lucky enough to see her NYFW debut (myself included) can purchase a ticket for A Bite of the Big Apple happening Thursday September 24th, 7:00pm, at Canvas Lounge (99 Powell Street). Wear Else/FLARE Magazine Fall Preview Event

The event

Last Tuesday, stylish women from across the city gathered at Wear Else in the Park Royal Shopping Centre for a fall preview event and fashion show. The event was co-sponsored by FLARE magazine and hosted in part by FLARE's editor-in-chief, Lisa Tant. Guests chatted as they sipped on wine and cocktails and nibbled on appetizers.

Looking elegant in a one-sleeve silk dress with a bold floral print, Ms. Tant kicked off the evening with a presentation summing up the major trends for fall/winter 2009, rife with runway photos and illustrated examples. The trends she cited included:

strong Balmain-esque shoulders
neon brights
the colour red
statement necklaces
denim leggings
bold, architecture-inspired shoes
over-the-knee boots

The show

Wear Else showed quality fall classics that would transition from this season to next year without looking too dated. Ladylike pieces such as wool jackets, 3/4 length wool coats and sleeveless sheath dresses graced the runway, accessorized by high-heel boots (some over-the-knee) and oversized slouchy handbags. Scarves added a jolt of colour. Although dresses featured relatively conservative cuts, a slightly higher hemline, and bold florals taken straight from the art world, lent a more contemporary vibe; these were dresses that would transition into fall well with some leggings or tights and a pair of boots or T-strap heels. Indeed, it was the accessories and little extras that stole the show: legwear, highly covetable boots, bags, chunky necklaces, and a sparkling cocktail ring.

Overall, there was nothing shown in clothes that I haven't seen before, but then again, in a stagnant economy filled with skittish consumers, classic pieces that aren't overly trendy will always be a solid investment.

Noir Bonbon Fall09

Launched by creative director Kim Sanieyan for spring 2009, Noir Bonbon is a fun, edgy line of sustainable, locally produced clothing. Kim, who studied marketing in Montreal, moved to Vancouver 3 years ago. She and her partner launched a web development company and in 2008, Kim decided to branch out to fashion.
Although not a trained designer, Kim's designs are eye-catching. Noir Bonbon is designed to be versatile and incorporates three distinct mini-collections: basic pieces; edgy (noir); and flirty (bonbon).

Noir Bonbon's colour palette—grey, black, blue, and white—for fall 2009 are inspired by the nordic landscape. “The collection is inspired by photos of Denmark,” Kim explained. Aside from a few tweed items, most of the pieces are cut from organic cotton, or tencel with luxurious trims like organic silk. Kim is committed to supporting local suppliers, so all the fabrics are locally sourced.
The line is quickly gaining national attention and spring 2009 will be Noir Bonbon's first national collection. The spring collection is entirely eco-friendly, featuring linens and silks in neutrals and coral.

Noir Bonbon's online store is set to launch in September. Meanwhile, the line is available at Body Politic, Not Just Pretty, Life of Riley, and Chic Agenda.

I'm fairly low-maintenance when it comes to my tresses: I like a wash-and-wear style that doesn't require tons of time with a straightening iron or multiple products to look good, and my hair has to be long enough to put up in a ponytail when I'm dancing. Over pizza and a refreshing Pimm's, my stylist Barbara and I decided to trim 3" off the ends, layer out some of the bulk and heaviness, and freshen up my bangs. About halfway through, Barbara became inspired by my "really classic" look and curled the ends under for a retro-inspired touch. The two hours flew by in a pleasant blur of food, drink, chatter, and at the end of it I had a great haircut I really liked--so much fun!

Barberella owner Laure-Elaine grabbed me out of the gaggle of fashion writers and declared that she would love to dye my virgin hair! She kept it subtle with two tones of sandy highlights hidden in the depths of my hair. While the uber-fashionable stylists were busy highlighting, washing and snipping, we were busy sipping the Pimm's cocktails and nibbling the delicious veggie pizza they plied us with. It was a relaxing, glamorous and utterly girlie experience - a pleasure!

The salon party was a fun, indulgent experience--being greeted with Pimm's was a wonderful touch! Pimm's always brings to mind sophisticated British outings, and for a moment, it felt like we were preparing for Ascot. Vanessa, my stylist, was fantastic--she was approachable and took care of me very well. She consulted with me about what I wanted (highlights) and she helped me pick out a colour. Because my hair is so dark, she had to bleach it first and then apply the colour. The red came out pretty much exactly as it looked in the book and I thought the placement was very clever--a subtle peek of red on the right side. I am thrilled with the result!

One of the most interesting points of the night was right at the get-go when each stylist tried to determine who would work best with which writer. It felt like we were being picked for a dance! But I'm really glad I ended up with Koto, as she walked through the different ideas that would best suit my hair. I usually give the stylist free range, and it definitely worked out. Kato's concept of dying a front segment of my hair a dark yet brightly hued magenta turned out wonderfully on my pixie cut. In between waiting for the dye to settle and the snipping, we shared our own hair horror stories. The experience couldn't have been better..

With Deandra Vaughn holding the scissors and me holding my Pimms we were off to a good start and the result, an hour later, was stylish and fresh. After a layered cut, subtle highlights, toning and a blowdry my hair felt lighter than I thought possible with my usually thick hair. Deandra gave me exactly what I didn’t even know I needed which demonstrates her expertise. A great cut and color combined with a fun girls-night-in vibe was a perfect girly evening.

I came to Barbarella after a long day, feeling like I wanted to just go home and sleep. After a bit of pampering, a great color and cut, a few glasses of Pimms and a couple slices of pizza, I left the salon feeling great! Melissa Majeran took one look at my hair and suggested exactly what I was already thinking - some subtle highlights at the tips to add depth and dimension to my already-colored mowhawk. She trimmed up the sides and then we took the plunge to add some funky designs to one side of my head. I'd been thinking about it for a while and was definitely excited about the results!

Spotted At Spend On Trend

I don't usually post on weekends but I wanted to remind Vancouver readers that Spend on Trend is happening right now! This is your chance to shop Canadian-made and designed goodies from all sorts of designers both emerging and established. I had a chance to pop by on Friday night.

Jenny Yen and Tabitha Savoie were present with summer and fall pieces from CiCi, Togs, and Two of Hearts. The designing duo's Main Street boutique has been open for 6 months already. Look for their online store coming this fall.

Jill MacLeod is the designer behind Crass and Sugar, a jewelry line full of quirky pieces made from unconventional materials and techniques--crocheted sterling silver and copper mesh, felt, bamboo, and upcycled kangaroo leather. Yes, you read that correctly--kangaroo leather! Jill, who's lived in Australia for several years, explains that Australian authorities cull the kangaroo population annually to prevent it from destroying the countryside vegetation. The leather from the culling is used to make shoes, belts, and other leather goods in Australia and would go to waste otherwise. Jill fashions edgy cuffs and elaborate honeycomb necklaces and earrings from this material.

Crass and Sugar pieces

Fresh-faced sisters Fumi and Himi Bull named their accessories line Davie and Chiyo after their father and mother. Plenty of lovely frame clutches were on display, but they also point out that they can make custom orders for special occasions and weddings.

Toodlebunny designer Trudy Wynans named her line after a nickname her boyfriend coined for her one Easter several years ago. Now Toodlebunny is synonymous with luxe-looking, vintage-inspired jewelry for stylish Vancouver girls in-the-know.

Toodlebunny necklaces blend eclectic elements such as leather, tassels, a skull, and a sword together into unique designs.

Fiona Louie (far right) designs sterling silver jewelry under the label Filou (formed from the first syllables of her first and last name).

I underestimated my willpower at this event and ended up buying the silver acorn on a 26" chain hanging under the leaf lariat necklace.

Narcissist Launches Bath & Body Line

Who says retail is slowing down? After 13 years in business, this Thursday marks a new beginning for Main Street must-stop Narcissist Design Co. Along with an official new look, Narcissist is launching their own line of bath and body products this Thursday.

I believe there's another local retailer who has in house bath & body creations - The Velvet Room? Someone's gonna have to be my fact checker. Point is that to survive you gotta be creative, innovative, and willing to do whatever it takes, which is why I'm happily applauding these companies.

Wise & Proper Delivers On Ladylike Clothes

My interview with Elizabeth Law, the designer behind the clothing line Wise & Proper, is slightly different from most interviews I do. First, our plans to meet go awry when we end up at different Starbucks locations downtown--something which has never happened to me before. A quick phone call is all it takes for us to synch up, though, and when I catch up with Liz she is already waiting for me, coolly sipping a passion tea lemonade and waiting to begin.

Another reason this interview is unique is that Liz is unlike any other designer I've ever met. She never attended fashion school and admits she hated sewing while growing up. She also confesses that she doesn't know much about what's going on with the fashion industry at large, such as what the big-name designers and labels are doing at the moment. Her so-called lack of knowledge stems from the fact that she never anticipated becoming a fashion designer: "Because I didn't know I was going to go this route, I didn't really follow the typical path. I just wanted to do something creative and something that would make me happy."

The path that did lead her towards fashion design is an interesting one. The child of Chinese immigrants, Liz succumbed to parental pressure to do "something practical" and completed an undergrad degree in business administration. However, she was dissatisfied with the lack of a creative outlet in her life and enrolled in a graphic arts program focusing on 3-D computer animation. During work on her demo reel, Liz developed a nascent form of arthritis from the long hours spent in front of a computer. She took a 3 month hiatus and went to Asia to visit her extended family. While there, an aunt who worked in fashion enlisted Liz's help on buying trips to Italy, and Liz began to seriously consider fashion as that elusive creative outlet.

Today, Liz divides her time between Vancouver and Hong Kong, working closely with manufacturers who transform her sketches into clothing when she's overseas. Wise & Proper derives its name from the characters in Liz's Chinese name and, true to form, produces classic, demure pieces that can be worn in the office or for a sophisticated evening out. "I want to make stuff that's timeless and not just whatever the latest fad is," says Liz. At the same time, this self-described tomboy (she's an accomplished martial artist with a black belt in Tong Moo Do and currently practices Brazilian jiu jitsu) has no problem getting in touch with her inner girly girl. For these reasons, the tops, dresses, and sweaters in each season feature simplistic lines and silhouettes with subtle, feminine detailing. Her practical, wearable designs are earning fans among fashion editors and Vancouverites alike.

The Fall 2009 collection will feature dresses galore--autumn-appropriate frocks in heavier jersey knit fabrications with long sleeves, as well as plenty of party dresses for the holiday season. Silhouettes will be loose, flowy, and feminine, with a lot of tunic dress pieces that can be worn as tops or mini dresses. The collection will also feature the luxurious cashmere hoodies and sweaters that Wise & Proper is known for.

For now, though, Liz is most excited about the launch of Wise & Proper's new online store, which will ship all over North America. She wants to expand her website and find more retailers to carry her line, and has tentative plans to incorporate more eco-friendly fabrics into her designs and move manufacturing to Canada. She's come a long way since she first began pursuing fashion design, but ever the restless creative soul, she believes she still has a long way to go.

Behind Kiss & Makeup: An Interview With Heather Huntingford

As you may remember from yesterday's post, I recently checked out Kiss & Makeup in the Park Royal Village. This unique concept boutique devoted to "apothecary and apparel" is the brainchild of Heather Huntingford. Heather was kind enough to take the time to answer a few questions via email.

Stylefinds: How long has Kiss & Makeup been around?
Heather: We are just about to celebrate our 5th birthday. Five years, it's crazy. I cannot believe how quickly this has gone by.

Stylefinds: What prompted you to open the store, and what inspired the "apothecary and apparel" concept?
Heather: Lifestyle. I personal suffer from severely sensitive skin and was always limited in the products that I could use and that were found at drug and department stores. I was always searching for lines that I could use and felt I could not be the only one. Furthermore, makeup is supposed to be fun and the environment should reflect that. Your typical department store just didn't cut it for me. So I created a store with amazing staff, highly edited and specific products, and a super atmosphere and vibe.

The transition into apparel was completely natural. We have always styled accessories, jewelry , bags, etc. on top of skin care and makeup. If I think about my personal favorite stores, they are all independent concept lifestyle stores and were a bit of an inspiration.

Stylefinds: Kiss & Makeup has some skincare and beauty lines that aren't found anywhere else. How do you go about researching what you'll carry in-store and deciding which products to stock?
Heather: Each line is here for a purpose. The have a specific niche. Perhaps they're strong in creating the perfect complexion like Becca, or they have an amazing array of colours like Vincent Longo. We also carry Cargo because we love supporting our fellow Canadians who are so ingenious with the products they create.

As for research, I read copious magazines, spend much time on blogs, read reviews, and of course sample products myself. I get to shop for a living--it's quite fun. Once I find a line that I am interested in, then the interview process between both companies begins to make sure we are a good retail partnership. I spend most of my time looking for niche, unique, small brands that are conscientious, use the best ingredients they can and of course have fabulous packing.

Stylefinds: What are your daily skincare and beauty must-haves?
Heather: Oh, this could get quite long...

If I am running out of the house, without a doubt, moisturizing sunscreen everyday (Coola, organic, cucumber and yummy); Sue Devitt Prime Target Intensive Eye Treatment ($40) to brighten, cool, reduce puffiness, tighten--really, it's magic in a tube for your under eye; Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector in Opal ($51), it's the best pick-me-up for the skin ( anti-hangover in a bottle, ha). Mascara of course: I use Jan Marini Lash Performance Mascara ($80)--it has a peptide in it and has really helped with the growth of the length of my lashes. Finally, finish off with gloss: Lipfusion Xl ($54) has collegen in it, which plumps and fills in the lips without any of the burn.

This sounds like a lot, but honestly, it's a 5 minute routine.

Stylefinds: Summer presents its own set of skincare and beauty challenges: sun damage, sweaty skin, melting makeup. What are your top tips and picks for staying fabulous in hot weather?
Heather: First off, a hat! It's really the best way to keep your face out of the sun and Eugenia Kim's fedoras are so super stylish. The girls laugh at me as I probably now have a different one for each day of the week. We already covered sunscreen, but wear your makeup according to the weather. It's the hottest it's ever been in Vancouver, so don't try for a matte look, go for glow, enhance the shine, and use water-resistant makeup.

Stylefinds: Kiss & Makeup is a beauty product lover's dream, but the collection of clothing and accessories it carries is very selective and carefully curated. How do you go about choosing which lines and items to carry in-store?
Heather: It's about what inspires me. I spend so much time looking at trends, shopping, and researching that I usually have a pretty specific idea of what I want. I try to make sure that each buying trip/tradeshow is in a different location, so over the course of the year I could do one in London and LA, the next year New York and LA. Each city is so unique and it's great to see the vibe and way clothing and trends are worn.

Stylefinds: Looking ahead, what's next for you personally and professionally?
Heather: More stores, that's the plan. One thing at a time; right now because this store has opened, my main focus will be back on our online store. I don't want the rest of Canada to miss out on our amazing store.

An Afternoon At Kiss & Makeup

As an East Van girl who spends inordinate amounts of time downtown and in her own neighbourhood, I rarely have a chance to explore retail offerings beyond my usual haunts. So when I received an email inviting me to check out the Kiss & Makeup boutique in West Vancouver, my curiosity got the better of me. This was how I found myself braving downtown traffic congestion and the Lion's Gate Bridge to reach the Park Royal Village one sunny Saturday afternoon. After 45 minutes in a hot, stuffy bus, I was there.

Kiss & Makeup is a beauty product lover's dream, beckoning to customers from behind its unassuming blue-and-white facade. Inside, the space is bright and airy. Knowledgeable staff are on-hand to answer questions about the products and labels found within its walls. K&M specializes in makeup and skincare for sensitive skin and the allergy-prone, resulting in a collection of carefully chosen cosmetic and skincare products and some obscure skincare labels I'd never heard of.

Sjal is just one of the many hard-to-find skincare lines at K&M formulated for sensitive skin. This Swedish label prides itself on simple, effective formulas packed full of active ingredients. Another sensitive skin-friendly line, and by far the most popular at K&M, is Ren, which boasts all-natural ingredients.

Stila, Vincent Longo, and Becca are some of the makeup labels you'll find.

The accessories and apparel are just as carefully curated as the cosmestics and skincare products. Poking around, I spotted Eugenia Kim hats and headbands, Mike and Chris jackets, Dace clothing, Matthew Williamson sunglasses, and Fiona Paxton beaded necklaces. One corner of the store was devoted to maternity and children's products, including the pink-festooned Principessa skincare line.

Principessa products appeal to girly souls with their pink packaging and delectable spun sugar scent.

I like how the kid's hair accessories combine a good dose of whimsy with preppy Gossip Girl style.

My appointment to peruse K&M included a session with resident makeup artist Savannah Olsen. Sensing my predilection for simple looks, Savannah used a lot of products from the Becca line to create a natural, polished look and a dewy complexion. While she did my makeup, she explained that Becca was an Australian line known for excellent SPF protection in many of its products and for giving its users flawless, sun-kissed skin.

...and after! Savannah used Becca stick foundation in Macadamia as a spot concealer to even out my complexion and set everything with Becca loose powder in Wheat. She swept Becca Jewel Dust in Nixie--a shimmery light blue--across my lids and Becca blush in Coquette across my cheeks. She also finished off my eyes by lining my top lashes with a charcoal shadow and applying Geisha Ink mascara. Finally, a little Vincent Longo gloss in Cherros finished off my summery look.

This is a sneak preview of what Terri and Larry have in store for fall/winter 2009. Hot as it is, I am really looking forward to fall fashion, and layering - coats and boots and big amazing chunky knit scarves.

Holts Contemporary Correspondent Search: Week 5

This week's Holt Renfrew blogger challenge was to choose a style icon from 1920-2000 and recreate their signature look. I chose Josephine Baker, one of the first black female entertainers to rise to celebrity status - rising from a childhood spent living on the streets of St. Louis to become the first black female to star in a major motion picture, to integrate a concert hall, a become a world-renowned performer. Always beautiful, confident and strong, Josephine was a pillar of the black community - so much so that she was offered the leadership of the Civil Rights Movement after the death of Martin Luther King.

Whether she was dressed in silk gowns, jewels and feathers, the iconic banana skirt or next to nothing at all, she radiated a grace and elegance seldom seen in the celebrities of today.

I chose to recreate George Hoynigen's 1929 Vanity Fair portrait of Ms. Baker, as taken from the Conde Nast archives - an image in which she appears draped in nothing more than pearls and fabric - an art deco statue personified.

Editorial: Sunday Photo Shoot with Terri Potratz

Terri of The Conveyor Belt, Victoria of demiCouture and I were planning a photoshoot road trip today to the glass bottle house in Boston Bar - but plans fell through and Terri and I ended up doing a much smaller road trip to her backyard, where we found some amazing beams of light waiting for us - a little bit of everyday magic. Fashion Exclusive: Designers on Designers

Designers design. They also style models, create patterns, source fabrics, run their business, perhaps even an e-business, and in the end, it’s up to them to make it all come together. That leaves pretty much zero free time to interact with other designers in the fashion industry, though this all changed on July 13th at a penthouse suite overlooking historic Gastown. The new concept Designers on Designers event took place, an innovative and collaborative photo shoot involving designers as models wearing one another’s creations.

Conceived by fashion photographer Darryl Humphrey and Stylefinds’ own Shallom Johnson, the event was all about connecting the very producers of fashion in Vancouver with one another. The concept came from the two working on a photo shoot brainstorming which designers to feature. Having taken note of designers’ incessant busyness and appreciation of their peers’ designs, Darryl and Shallom’s editorial transformed into a beautiful meet and greet event where designers became the models and stylists, helping one another put together looks for their close-ups.

Featured fashion designers included Project Runway Canada’s Carlie Wong, Rozemerie Cuevas of JC Studio, Melissa Ferreira who brought re-worked vintage dresses, and Melanie Talkington, whose waist-cinching corsets are worn by burlesque star Dita von Teese. The clothing was jazzed up by Elsa Corsi’s jewels from Jeweliette, Heather Mandin’s funky Parts by Heather Baubles, and Natalie Meyer’s Sienna Ray & Co leather purses. Vancouver retailer Veronika Balspy of Lark Clothing also joined in on the dress-up fun.

The rules of engagement were few and simple: everyone had to come dressed in Canadian design and be willing to participate, which meant wearing at least 2 designers with at least one piece styled from another. Though I covered the event from the sidelines, I put my best foot forward in Cocopunkz hand-painted pumps, and came dressed head to toe in Canadian design from Forsya Boutique.

Well heeled fashionistas getting to know one another / Hair, makeup, and champagne - oh my!

Most had no idea what they signed themselves up for, including Veronika Baspaly who agreed to the event because she trusted Shallom would put on a great event. Others were well prepared and ahead of the game, such as Elsa Corsi who, in anticipation for the event, had her nails done to match the rose-print sequin dress from Carlie Wong’s Fall 09 collection.

Among the treats of the evening was an enchanting jazz performance by Jackee Guillou Trio on the rooftop. Jackee’s sultry voice took everone’s breath away with a rendition of Edith Piaf’s “Je Ne Veux Pas Travailler.” Back at the shoot, guests were treated with drinks and nibbles, including tasty vanilla & chili tequila ice cream served in bite sized chocolate dipped cones. Natalie Meyer sums up the feelings of the night, “[I’m having a] great time – [it’s] a very new experience to be the one in the spotlight!”

Fashion Blogger Clothing Sale: July 25th

Mark your calendars, it's time for the best consignment sale ever! Myself, Terri Potratz, Victoria Potter and Kim Cathers are all teaming up and emptying our closets to bring you a massive and amazing clothing sale on July 25th at Grace Gallery (Main and 3rd). You would not believe how many clothes, shoes and accessories we have to sell between the four of us, it's a bit ridiculous. And you won't believe our prices, either - we are all sick of going to secondhand shops where things cost practically the same as when new. Everything in store will be very VERY affordable, but we are a cash only shop so please do visit the ATM beforehand.

Got stuff that's sitting in your closet? Maybe it's too big or too small or just not quite your cup of tea anymore? Are you (like me) in the habit of buying things and never wearing them? Do you (like me) need some extra cash in your pocket? You can consign your clothes with us - drop them off at the beginning of the day and pick up your cash when we close up shop. We will take a 25% consignment fee, you keep the rest! After we're done, you can either take the remaining clothes home with you or we can donate them to charity on your behalf.

Holts Contemporary Correspondent Search: Week 4

For this week's challenge, we had the task of styling an outfit using only clothing pulled from Holt Renfrew. We were asked to pick one of this season's "must-have" items (I chose a miniskirt) and style an outfit around it. We then had to film a 30-second clip explaining our styling choices, accompanied by a couple of sentences about why we chose that particular "must-have" piece. I was like a kid in a candy store! Being able to shop for an entire outfit at Holts without having to look at price tags...well, it's a little bit overwhelming, to say the least! We tried on many many beautiful things and finally found something that was a "WOW".

Backstage Insider: Chanel Haute Couture Fall 2009

My lovely friend Tara Jean (third from left, above) had the pleasure of walking in the Chanel Haute Couture show in Paris last week - an experience made even more exciting because it was just her second-ever runway show! This girl is going places, people - keep watching! She is still overseas, but took time out of her busy schedule to give me an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at walking for The Kaiser. Enjoy!

The show was incredible... you want a quick overview?? Hmm... the building it was in was huge... aptly named Grand Palais. The show was set up around Chanel n°5 bottles, which is kind of funny because it was my moms very first signature scent!

Lets see, from the beginning. I went in for the casting, everybody was waiting in the lobby. Then we all went in, some girls went in and out quick. Others walked a few times and then left. I went in and walked, then they had me wait in a kitchen area. There were other girls in there (top models apparently but honestly this really isn't my scene, I'm sorry I cant identify them for you) and they were waiting for their fitting. So in retrospect, being in the kitchen meant I made it and was waiting for my fitting! Anyways, they called me in to try on different outfits that weren't finished being made so they were just pinned together. I walked a few more times in each outfit then they thanked me and I left. But not before getting a recommendation for a good local sushi spot.

A day later was the "Accessorization" or something like that. I had heard Karl Lagerfeld was going to be there. I had seen photos of him before and knew he was important but again, not knowing much about the fashion industry I couldn't have named him for the life of me. My fashion addicted roommates however, as soon as they found out I got the show, briefed me on him and all the models that would likely be in the show with me. So I went for the fitting and took my camera. When I got there they did hair and makeup. Then led me to another room and dressed me and accessorized. Last they took me into another room where - guess who was waiting to give approval. After KL approved they sent me downstairs to take photos, which by the way if you checked the detail shots on style.com I had closed toed shoes not open toed...?? Anyways, after photos they said I could change. So I threw on my clothes then ran back in with my camera to ask for a photo with Karl. Everyone seemed a little surprised and I later found out I was the first girl to ask for a photo with him at a fitting! He just smiled and said I could have one so his photographer took one with my camera, and then another with his.

We had rehearsal that night from 9.30pm 'til 2am, lots of the girls had just flown in and were very tired by the end of it. The metro wasn't running anymore so I walked home with another model, Angelika. I don't recommend walking around Paris at night by the way, but if you're with someone else and walking through touristy parts of town... it's okay. Walk fast...haha :)

We had to be in at 5pm and the show was scheduled to start at 9pm. First thing was hair... I had 3 people on me a lot of the time. One styling, one assisting, and one that kept coming by to direct the stylist... and occasionally other stylists would stop over to see what was going on. Meanwhile there were caterers that brought juice or there was also veggie, meat and cheese plates to munch on. Then a lady came by to give me a manicure and pedicure, even though my outfit had tights and closed toed shoes. lucky me!

Next was a quick hour of rehearsal. Then back to makeup, again... there was always someone directing and double checking. The press was walking around taking photos throughout. Then Karl came in and they all jumped on him. His photographer, Xiang Sun came and gave me the photo of KL and I that he had taken at the fitting. I asked Karl to autograph it for me and he did with love! Then he took a photo of Baptiste Giabiconi and I together.

A lot of the other girls were top models and had worked with each other before so they congregated together. I stayed busy on my cell phone, haha. One of the Chanel people gave me a goodie bag with makeup and nail polish. Not bad for a new girl :) Then we changed into our outfits and lined up for the show.

More press on the way to the runway, then the music started, La Roux- In For The Kill. All the music was stuff that had been previously used for promotion of the Chanel fragrances. I only had one outfit, which made it easy for me to stay calm. I wasn't even nervous at all until I was the next girl to go out. Then my heart started pounding!! But I went out, hit all my spots... and didn't fall! My second runway ever, and I think I rocked it.

I want to give a shout out to Evan & Dean and Z!NK mag for giving me my first runway experience, and to Liz Bell and MAJOR of course... love you guys!

Holts Contemporary Correspondent Search: Week 3

This week's challenge was to videotape our best runway walk, accompanied by a song of our choice. We had to style our outfit by taking inspiration from our chosen soundtrack.

My song? Nothing 2 Step 2, by Thunderheist.
My clothing? Something bright and sexy to match the energy of the song. I chose a vintage Alexander Henry print dress and a vintage belt, both from brand new Main St vintage boutique F as in Frank. I added a well-loved pair of Seychelles Main Squeeze boots and some chunky mod bangles from Ark to finish the look.

Got Craft presents Handmade Nation

As someone who isn't really "handy", I really enjoy making things. In my early twenties, I dabbled in jewellery design. Most recently, I re-discovered knitting and I feel a sense of accomplishment whenever I finish a project. It's even more fulfilling when I can give the socks or scarves I make to loved ones or donate them to charities.

The growing popularity of etsy and local markets such as portobello west attests to the fact that more and more of us are finding joy in things lovingly made by hand.

Author and filmmaker Faythe Levine has documented the rise of craft culture in the United States in Handmade Nation: The Rise of DIY, Art, Craft, and Design and in a film of the same name.

Vancouver premier of the film is this Thursday at the Rio Theatre (1660 E. Broadway). The film will be preceded by a craft showcase featuring 14 local artists. Faythe Levine will also be on-hand to introduce the film and hold a Q&A session after the screening. Tickets are $20.00 in advance.

F As In Frank Grand Opening

F As In Frank celebrated the grand opening of its Vancouver flagship store on Main and Broadway last Friday. Champagne and beer flowed all night long as shoppers, guests, and well-wishers browsed the store. Clothing racks filled with one-of-a-kind vintage finds hung from the ceiling: the racks, made out of metal tubes suspended by cables, had been pulled up to make room for revels.

The modular racks and colourful clothes overhead weren't the only eye-catching distractions inside, though. Offbeat decor details graced the spacious store wherever I looked: birch log pillars (a signature touch carried over from F As In Frank's first store in Whistler); colourful murals and antler door handles decorating the dressing rooms; old school boom boxes stacked in the storefront window; and a fully functional Mortal Kombat arcade game. Remembering the kitschy sunglasses from our '80s photo shoot, I was pleased to see a whole wall of fun shades for around $20 a pop.

Owners Jesse and Drew Heifetz

F As In Frank is surely a labour of love for owners and Ontario natives Drew and Jesse Heifetz. The brothers have been collecting vintage clothing since they were kids and were inspired by their father's love of '60s clothing. Their pursuit of all things vintage takes them around the globe and yields pieces from the 1900s to the 1990s. Particularly impressive is F As In Frank's collection of outerwear, which ranges from utilitarian denim jackets worn by workers to embroidered silk bombers from Japan, hippie jackets, and 1950s motorcycle jackets (think James Dean).

The day before F As In Frank opened its doors, news about Michael Jackson's death broke. Drew and Jesse put together this display as a tribute to the King of Pop.

Most pieces in-store are less than $50 and unlike anything else you'll find in Vancouver, so hop to it and venture down to Main and Broadway to browse this veritable treasure trove of vintage goodness!
